Flat, Bevel, Slant, or Upright

A Guide to Headstone Styles

A Plain-Language Guide to Choosing the Right Memorial

When families sit down with us to choose a headstone, one of the first questions is about style. Should it lie flat in the grass or stand upright? What is the difference between a bevel and a slant? It is a lot to sort through, especially during a time of loss.

At Modern Monument Works in Cleburne, Texas, we have helped families answer these questions since 1883. This guide walks through the four main headstone styles, what sets each one apart, and how to choose the one that fits your loved one, your family, and your cemetery.

The Four Main Headstone Styles

Most memorials fall into one of four styles. The biggest difference between them is how far the stone rises above the ground, and how much room it gives you for words and artwork.

Flat Markers

  • Level With the Ground
Set into the earth or on a cement or granite pad, with a clean and simple look

  • Standard Sizes
    A single flat marker is 24 x 12 x 4 inches, and a double companion marker is 48 x 14 x 4 inches

Bevel Markers

  • Back Raised Slightly
The back edge sits a few inches higher, so names and dates are easier to read

  • A Middle Ground
Many flat and pet markers can be beveled two inches, a good fit where only low markers are allowed

Slant Markers

  • About 16 Inches Tall
A straight back with the front face sloped at about a 45 degree angle

  • Simple Presence
More height than a flat or bevel marker, without the full size of an upright

Upright Monuments

  • Stone and Base
The classic headstone: an engraved granite stone on a matching base

  • The Most Room
Space for names, dates, verses, and artwork, for one person or two

Flat and bevel markers are allowed in many cemeteries and memorial parks that limit taller stones. Both come in many granite colors and designs, and both can be made in other sizes.

Standard Upright Monument Sizes

Here are the standard sizes we make most often. Other sizes are available, and your cemetery may set its own limits.

Single Monument
A 24 x 6 x 20 inch monument on a 42 x 12 x 6 inch base, sized for one person.

Double Monument
A 42 x 6 x 20 inch monument on a 60 x 12 x 6 inch base, one of our two most popular companion sizes.

Larger Double
A 48 x 6 x 24 inch monument on a 66 x 12 x 6 inch base, our other popular companion size.

Custom Shapes
Premium monuments in custom shapes, from hearts to motorcycles, designed around one life.
