Ways to Tell Their Story in Stone

Ideas for Personalizing a Headstone

Faith, Family, and the Details That Made Them Who They Were

A name and two dates tell you who rests there. They do not tell you who that person was. The best memorials go further. They show a faith that carried someone through life, a hobby they loved, or a few words the family still repeats today.

At Modern Monument Works in Cleburne, Texas, our in-house designers help families add those details to every kind of memorial. Here are some of the most meaningful ways to personalize a headstone, and how we bring each idea to life.

Start With Their Story

Before you think about designs, think about the person. What did they love? What did people remember about them? Most families find their ideas in one of these four places.

Faith

  • Symbols
Crosses, praying hands, and other religious symbols

  • Verses
A favorite scripture or prayer engraved in stone

Hobbies

  • What They Loved
A pastime shown as a scene or a carved image

  • Custom Shapes
Some families go further, with a stone shaped like a motorcycle

Service and Groups

  • Military Service
Emblems that honor time spent in uniform

  • Organizations
Symbols for fraternal groups, clubs, and lodges

Flowers and Pets

  • A Favorite Flower
Roses, lilies, or the bloom they grew at home

  • A Beloved Pet
An etched likeness of a loyal companion

Some families also choose symbols that reflect their heritage or nationality. Whatever you choose, it should feel like them. If you are not sure where to start, bring a few photos and memories to your consultation, and we will help you find the right details.

Choosing the Right Words

Words are often the most personal part of a memorial. Most of our markers and monuments include the name, the dates, and one additional line of text, as long as it fits the design you choose. Companion markers can also include a wedding date for the couple.

That extra line can be an epitaph, a verse, a nickname, or a short phrase the family loved. Upright and slant styles leave more room for longer inscriptions, while flat and bevel markers work best with a few well-chosen words. Our guide to headstone styles explains the difference.

How We Add Artwork to Stone

Our designers use several techniques, often in combination. Each one creates a different look, and we will show you which fits your design best.

Sandblasting
Cuts lettering, borders, and designs cleanly into the face of the granite.

Shaped Carving
Gives designs real depth, so flowers and symbols rise from the stone.

Sculpture
Forms the stone itself into a figure or shape that tells the story.

Etching and Engraving
Adds fine detail for portraits, scenes, and pictures of a beloved place.

Portraits and scenes are some of the most moving details we create. A favorite photo can become a lasting image of a face, a home, or a place your loved one cherished.

Custom Shapes and Bronze Designs

A memorial does not have to be a rectangle. Our custom-shaped monuments come in many forms, from hearts to motorcycles, each designed around one life.

Bronze memorials can be personalized too. We offer free design service and catalogs with a wide variety of bronze marker designs, and we can help you create a custom bronze marker if you have something unique in mind.

How Your Design Comes Together

Every personalized memorial starts with a free consultation. We talk through your ideas, then help you choose the size, color, design, and the layout of names, dates, and any inscription. Before production begins, you review a drawing of the finished design, so every detail is right.

Keep in mind that some cemeteries limit the size or style of markers, which can affect how much artwork fits. Our article on cemetery rules for headstones covers what to check first.
